You form great networks.” However, he was open to experiment with online learning and ended up changing his mind. With more than 120 employees pursuing online courses at Columbia Business School since January 2014, Sales-Cavalcante now believes that these courses are highly effective and encourages more staff to study online.

He says that more business will think twice about sending their staff to traditional B-schools as unless there is a strict need for “experiential learning”. He adds “Business schools need to think about how they reinvent themselves and how they leverage technology.” There is no doubt that leading institutes like Wharton, Harvard and Columbia, are now feeling threatened with the vast array of benefits offered by online business study. With advancement of technology and growing credibility of online learning, most schools are introducing a line-up of online programmes. However, I must admit, that these courses are not intended to replace traditional executive courses, but to supplement them.

Making Education Affordable And Accessible 

Bharat N. Anand, Faculty Chair at Harvard Business School's online learning initiative HBX says that the rise in affordable and free online content may result in a drop in student enrollment in traditional programmes. This might also affect the revenue stream as well. But as businesses have various requirements, a number of models will eventually coexist, he says.

Another advantage on online business education is that it has substantially expanded the reach of education to numerous students from different parts of the world. Shilpa Patwardhan, connected learning director at Wharton Executive Education, says “In the past, the only option was to send people to campus. But (the costs) limited the number of people who could take the class. The reach that online education has is what organisations find attractive.”

A new study titled See the Future, suggests that with the growing popularity of online programmes and MOOCs, increasing tuition fees in colleges, demanding needs of employers and strong market competition, traditional education approaches face a severe challenge.

The research was done by B-school consultant and education market research establishment CarringtonCrisp, in association with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). See the Future has gathered opinions from CEOs, chairmen, employers and even Directors and Deans at B-schools from more than 63 nations.

The study found that colleges and business schools face four main challenges, namely technology, staffing problems, market competition and costs. Hence, almost all institutions feel the compulsion to re-evaluate their courses and curriculum. Why? As there is a strong move to a multidisciplinary way of learning and a growing need to fulfill the demands of students and businesses, business schools have realized that it is time to reconsider their offerings. The research also discovered that lifelong learning will keep being significant for students, but due to technological progress, lifestyle learning will also become important.

Increasing Demand For Online Study

 Businesses and employers need training and development programmes that are fast, cheap and highly effective and which offer excellent value for money. The study discovered that these employers are increasingly accepting more online diplomas and degrees mainly because it does not require accommodation and travel expenses. See the Future found that even though online education was well accepted, but almost 80 per cent respondents claimed that “Executive education for senior managers and directors will remain face to face.” Alan Hatfield, ACCA director of learning, said “Anytime, anywhere learning is on the rise, providing students with the flexibility to learn at their own pace and around their other commitments such as work and family.”

Author of the study, Andrew Crisp, said “This situation is not a perfect storm, but the Dean who sticks their

head in the sand and fails to think about how best to position their school for the future risks their school and its students being left behind.”

Hatfield added “When they hire new talent, employers believe a professional qualification is essential or desired. As a professional body, ACCA is committed to business education - working with universities, MOOC providers and business schools around the world, we aim to ensure the future of business education remains relevant and valued.”

CEO and DG at EFMD, Eric Cornuel, said “It has been clear for many years that the pace of change in business education is accelerating. Understanding the drivers of change and the demands of those seeking to learn in the future are key to our member schools delivering effective solutions. More and more, our members recognize the need for business to be studied in a wider context, to see the impact it has on society.”

He concluded by saying “To this end, there is a growing need for business schools to work with other faculties, departments and experts throughout universities and beyond to ensure students receive a rounded education.”

Changing Face of Education: Boon or Bane?

Brick and mortar campuses, well manicured lawns, blackboards, desks, laboratories, library, study room, and common rooms. These are things we usually associate schools and colleges with. However, ask students now what springs to mind the first time they hear the word college, you’ll hear words like computers, laptops, internet, applications, online study forums, tabs and smartphones. The definition of education is slowly changing. As a former educator, I feel like an alien when students say ‘I Googled it’, instead of ‘I looked it up in the library’ or ‘I’ll catch you on Skype if I have queries’ instead of ‘I’ll meet you if I have any queries.’ So basically, not matter how much we may like or dislike it, there is no denying the fact that technology has invaded the world of education and is taking it by storm.

MOOCs instead of formal college education: Educators’ point of view

Recently, government officials and university leaders from the five continents got together to discuss and debate the changing face of education at the Princeton-Fung Global Forum in Paris. The main focus was on whether online education platforms are posing as a threat to society and academia.

While Gideon Rosen, Stuart Professor of Philosophy and chair of the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University, described the entire MOOC world as a nightmarish scenario, Daphne Koller, Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and co-founder of Coursera, described that very world as the future of global education.

According to Rosen, the MOOC World that provides college courses at a lesser price and more conveniently, makes the students pay a price as big as forsaking one on one interaction with their teachers. Imagine the teacher not even knowing the student’s name. That certainly is a tragedy. He also asked parents whether they want something like that for their children.

Counter question

On the other hand you have professors from various universities who simply want us to see how pleasant the scenario is. Daphne Koller, co-founder of Coursera, points out how thousands of students, from all around the world, are benefiting from MOOCs. She agrees that online course certificates don’t carry the same value as college diplomas but she also adds that soon the employers will start accepting them.

William Lawton, director of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, London says that these courses do not affect the core worth of higher education but may pose as a commercial threat to universities. He also maintains that the future is blended, which means that higher education institutions will use the best of both worlds.

In my opinion, MOOCs may just be the right thing for the future for higher education as long as it does not provide students with bad or wrong information. If a person can cut costs, do a job and study at the same time, then I’m sure it’s for the better of humanity.
